NEXT YEAR, if they don't sell enough .. Blackberry & Sony Are Planning To Quit Smartphone Business for Good
BlackBerry's chief executive and Sony's boss have separately admitted
within the week that 2016 is a crucial year for their smartphone
businesses. The two executives have said they may kill off their
BlackBerry and Sony phones if they will not generate money next year.
John Chen, BlackBerry's CEO, shared during the Code Mobile conference
on Thursday, Oct. 8, the possibility of giving up its handset business
if it can't meet the goal of selling five million smartphones a year.
“Sometime next year we have to make our device business profitable, otherwise I have to rethink what I do there,” said Chen. “My job is to make sure the value of the company is protected and increases... Even if I’m not in the handset business, getting into providing security for Android lets us provide solutions via software.”
BlackBerry, before the rise of iPhone in 2007, was billed the world's most famous smartphone maker. However, it did not manage to catch up with the competition since that time.
In fact, the company's U.S. market share in September 2009 was at 42.6 percent. However, in August this year, BlackBerry only recorded 1.2 percent share in the U.S. market.
The chief executive did say if it will give up the phone business, it will focus its attention on its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) as well as cross-platform secure communication applications.
A big chunk of the sales volume is expected to come from the hotly awaited BlackBerry Priv, deemed as its first Android-powered slider device, which is slated to hit stores by the end of this year.
"Today, I am confirming our plans to launch Priv, an Android device named after BlackBerry's heritage and core mission of protecting our customers' privacy. Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform," said Chen in September.

r its options" should its mobile division will fail to generate profit next year.
"We will continue with the business as long as we are on track with the scenario of breaking even next year onwards," Hirai did mention.
Many of its profits will rely on Xperia Z5, 4K Xperia Z5 as well as Z5 Compact which it introduced at IFA conference in Berlin last month.
Based on the company's data last year, Sony phones logged only 17.5 percent of Japan's market and less than one percent in North America.

Innovations on mobile broadband on Transportation
Mobile broadband is helping to transform transportation. Toyota uses the LTE Connected Car concept which it called a
“smartphone on wheels.” Using mobile broadband, the car integrates
features to improve safety and provide access to information such as
maps and directions, destination highlights and weather details.
Passengers can also enjoy better entertainment and more productivity
tools with video streaming and access to corporate networks.
Mobile phones also provide access to important transportation
information in real time. Checking the status of a flight to see if it
is on time or has been canceled is easily accomplished by mobile phone
or using an app like TripIt to receive alerts. Similarly commuters can
use their mobile devices to find travel information on buses or trains.
Cities like San Francisco are using mobile networks to deploy smart
parking system that allow users to locate an open parking spot or pay
for parking using a mobile phone. Both Google and Microsoft provide
traffic information in real time. Google Maps provides a “traffic”
button on its maps in metropolitan areas that shows red-yellow-green
indicators for current traffic speeds and allows the user to learn
“normal” traffic levels by the time of day or day of the week. Microsoft
offers Clearflow, a service that uses artificial intelligence to
provide navigation advice that takes into account expected traffic
conditions on a roadway-by-roadway basis.
Intelligent transportation systems integrated with GPS navigators such
as Telenav on smart phones let users know about real-time traffic
conditions and advise drivers on optimal route navigation patterns to
take less congested routes. Future advances will make these systems
bi-directional, integrating traffic patterns with traffic signal lights.
Finally, mobile broadband is being used to improve commercial
transportation. Businesses can use mobile networks to track and trace
their fleets and better manage their inventory.

Do you want to save a life? Read how ICT can be used in emergency situations. Think about other applications for this technology
Using
your ICT knowledge to build a smart watch, like those worn by the kids
in the Spy Kids movies, could help protect people and save lives.
David
Ingerson has made a digital wristwatch like that. Unlike those in the
movies, it doesn’t shoot laser beams but it certainly does a lot of
other cool things. It’s called the Find-Me watch.
Say
you were out bushwalking and fell and hurt yourself, and you dropped
your mobile phone so you couldn’t call for help. You could press a
button on the Find-Me watch and let emergency services know you were in
trouble.
Using GPS, the watch tells them
where you are, anywhere in the world. And if there is mobile phone
coverage where you are, it then becomes an emergency mobile phone. You
can talk to emergency services and they can talk to you, and hear
everything that’s going on around you like you were on a speaker phone.
All that in a smart-looking watch. And, yes, it does tell the time!
David started working on it to help his dad, who had dementia. So the first Find-me Watch
watch was for people with dementia so that their carers could monitor
them and know they are safe. Then a company in London asked David to
design a version that could be used by security guards who patrol places
alone at night, and people like nurses working late who might be
worried about walking to their cars in the dark.
Says
David: “We’ve also been asked to look at creating one for sailors, that
would work anywhere in the world. If someone were suddenly washed
overboard or their boat capsized and they couldn’t get to their
emergency locator beacon they would have the watch.
“In
the future we won’t communicate through mobile phone towers, it will be
satellite networks. “The potential of technology is enormous and I
wanted to do something that makes a real difference, that’s why I
started this. The ability of ICT to save lives is fantastic!”
